The Pekina Wind Engine

The weather engine draws on live weather conditions from Pekina situated in the Flinders Ranges, South Australia
- where terra_nova was originally realised as an interactive web based project in 1999.

Upon entering the user finds themselves positioned at the centre of a 16 x18 grid (288 cells) of potential media.
Wind speed and direction determine how movement occurs across the media field, guiding the viewer through a shifting grid of image, sound and text.

Each day nervous_objects ventured out as data archaeologists, gathering images, sounds and video from Pekina and its surrounds, then returning to the old stone dance hall to sort, collate and upload these fragments into the live Pekina Wind Engine.

Stronger winds move more quickly, changing winds redirect the journey, and the sequence is never fully fixed. What appears on screen is not curated in advance, but continually shaped by the atmosphere at the site itself.
